Cleaning & Final Walk-Through Checklist

This list is a guide and may not include all items need to be performed upon move-out. If the home or property is damaged, or the items below have not been performed upon move-out, a deduction will be taken from your security deposit or you may incur additional move-out charges. 

Clean Thoroughly

If your home has been professionally cleaned, please provide the receipt for the service. Without copies of receipts, if the home requires additional professional cleaning, expenses may be deducted from your deposit.

  • Floors and Baseboards
    • Sweep and mop all tile and hardwood floors-
    • Vacuum and Steam clean all carpeting (provide receipt for steam cleaning)
    • Remove any stains on flooring or carpets
    • Remove dirt and wax sediments from floor areas, including the basement and storage areas
    • Wipe down baseboards
    • During the pre/final inspection, the home will be tested for animal/human urine and condemned if found to be contaminated

  • Walls
    • Wipe down walls, especially areas in the kitchen, bathroom and above heaters and vents
    • Walls should be free of dirt, oil stains, shelf paper, staples, tacks, etc. This includes crayon marks, heavy smudges on the walls, or excessive dirt. Please note that the walls must be clean, regardless of potential painting
    • Brush cobwebs from corners and ceilings

  • Cabinets
    • Clean out all cabinets, drawers, pantry, shelves and wipe down - items should be free of dirt, oil stains, shelf paper, staples, tacks, etc.
    • If you have used stickers, wallpaper borders, and contact paper on your cabinets, drawers, or walls, they must be removed as well as all adhesive film residues

  • Kitchen
    • Clean all surfaces
    • Clean vanity, shelves, and interior of cabinets - items should be free of dirt, oil stains, shelf paper, staples, tacks, etc.
    • Thoroughly clean all appliances
      • Stove, oven and range hood
        • The range top, oven, and exhaust hood and overhead light must be free of grease and burned-on residues, stains and dust
        • The exterior of the stove and range must be free of grease and food particles
        • Remove drip pans and clean interior
        • Remove all personal items
      • Refrigerator
        • Clean out and sanitize
        • Remove any accumulated dried food particles
        • Defrost
        • Replace filters
      • Clean microwave
        • Or remove personal countertop microwave you may have brought into the home
      • Clean out dishwasher, including around and inside the door
      • To the extent you can, move appliances away from the wall to clean behind and underneath the appliance and move back after cleaning
    • Run ice cubes, salt, and cold water through the garbage disposal to clean out remnants of food 

  • Bathrooms
    • Clean and disinfect all mildew and discoloring
    • Remove excessive buildup of calcium deposits and soap scum around fixtures, caps, and on walls  
    • Clean and sanitize the bathtub, shower, and sink
    • Clean and sanitize toilet bowls - inside and out
    • Clean vanity, shelves, and interior of cabinets - items should be free of dirt, oil stains, shelf paper, staples, tacks, etc.
    • Clean mirrors - should be free of soap build-up or streaks
    • Clean tile – shower/bath walls, and flooring
    • Clean and remove dust from exhaust fans

  • Other items
    • Clean inside of windows, including tracks, blinds, and screens
    • Clean blinds, if present
    • Clean ceiling fan blades and light fixtures
    • Clean doors, door frames, and knobs
    • Clean switch plates
    • Clean radiator if present. Convectors and pipes should be free of dirt, sediments, and stains
    • Clean laundry area

  • Remove all personal items and trash
    • The house should be empty upon move-out
    • Remove personal items from all areas of the residence, including utility sheds, garages, and basements
    • Remove any personal appliances brought into the home that do not belong to Hudson Homes (countertop microwave for example), storage or gifting of appliances is not authorized and you will be charged for removal
    • Conveyance items (items left in the home) require pre-approval by Hudson Homes – or you will be charged for removal
    • Remove trash from crawl spaces, storage areas, and trashcans

  • Clean exterior of home and all storage areas
    • Remove outdoor belongings from patio, deck, terrace, balcony, yard, etc.
    • Remove personal items from the garage, basement and storage areas  
    • Broom clean outdoor and storage areas and garage
      • Remove accumulated debris and seeping of the area
      • Excessive accumulations of dirt, gummy materials, oil, and grease stains must be cleaned
      • Areas should be free of dirt, stains, and grease
    •  Clean out gutters
    • Final landscaping – mow, trim bushes, blow areas needed
    • Perform snow removal as needed
    • Repair pet damage to yards, decks, sheds, and fences
    • Ensure that all pet feces have been removed from the yard

Repair Items & Perform Resident Responsibilities 

Residents are responsible for the following: 

    • Fix tears, holes or burn marks in the carpets
    • Repair any broken tiles or damaged wood floors
    • Remove all nails/screws/tacks from walls and ceilings
    • Fill smaller holes with spackle and wipe smooth
    • Patch larger holes, sand and re-paint (with original color) the area
    • Repair and repaint any walls you may have damaged
    • Repair and repaint any walls you have painted (accent walls, wallpaper, etc.)
    • Repair any pet damage
    • Remove any window hardware you may have added and patch holes
    • Fix any broken blinds
    • Fix broken windows (glass) and screens
    • Make sure doors and locks work properly, repair as needed
    • Clear any clogged drains
    • Repair any appliances you may have damaged
    • Ensure toilets are working properly
    • Ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working and replace batteries if needed
    • Change HVAC air filters
    • Replace burnt out light bulbs
    • All broken light globes must be replaced
    • Replace batteries in garage remotes/FOBS as needed
    • Replace batteries in Rently device as needed 

Additional Items

Some additional items that may require your attention:

    • Generally items that cost less than $100 in materials are considered resident responsibilities – please repair or replace these items as needed prior to move-out
    • Cure/pay any outstanding violations or fines you may have incurred on the property
    • If applicable, refill fuel/oil tank to 2/3 full upon move-out
